Eruption
I am working on this design right now, which will be fun to do. I got inspired of some heat-treated, black oak I just bought for other purposes. Being treated 4 days in very hight temperature, makes the oak black, and almost 100% stabile. I haven't heard of an oak-guitar yet, but it could be interesting to build, even if it's not considered "tonewood". The "lavaflow" will be extreme curly Mahogany, which I have a couple of pieces of. I also consider laminating the neck with center of the mahogany, 2 ply red carbon, and then oak for the sides. I have thought of using red Q tuner pickups, but it seems that they have closed their business, and might open next year!
Suggestions, comments welcome!

Re: Eruption
Hello Pedder,
I would consider that thermo treated oak, lumber in general, doesnt keep its dark, black brown clour for a long time, it gets (ugly?) grey after a not very long time. The colour is not UV stable.
best regards, alex

Re: Eruption
good morning and welcome to the pleasuredome. Nice designs, nice website.
Did you try one of those Eruptions? The question that appears inbetween my purple Brainhaze: does it feel good, having this Body on the leg? The shape seems to be a lil tight for a biglegged one
let it roll

Re: Eruption
First of all: wow!!!
Terrific design, really like it! Will the lava flow be solid mahagony or a top veneer/inlay? If not, how will yoy make the pieces perfect matching?
Looking forward for more pics!
cheers

Re: Eruption
Thanks for the UV point Alex....I'll check with my woodpusher to ask his advice
The shape might not be too well suited for sitting down....guess we'll have to make one to test!
The lava flow will not be a problem with the CNC machine in the workshop, which my son built, and runs like a dream. We sure would like to take it all the way through the axe, but I might stick to 10mm like we did on the Mako....haven't decided yet

Re: Eruption
Hej! Hvor’n skærn?
I like the design. Alot! Can't wait to see it getting build! Regarding your wood colour: I just checked wikipedia for smoked oak. It's stated there, that smoked oak is more resilient against ultra violet radiation then thermo oak or regular oak for that matter. Here's the link:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Räuchereiche
It's German (I couldn't find it in English) but if I remember correctly, you understand reading german, right? Also, due to umlaut, the link does not work properly. Copy paste it completely, then it's gonna work.
Cheers!

Re: Eruption
thanks Otz
This link is to Ammonia treated oak. The stuff I have, has been put into an oven... heated for 4 days, at a temperature where it's close to burning. The process is very delicate, and if you go too high, you make the wood fragile. It actually happened in this case, and the sawmill sold it to me as firewood. They have only checked a few planks, so I'll have to "burn" my way through the pile, and look for useable pieces....I bet you I'll find some, but if not, I could go for Wenge or Walnut. I am expecting a couple of planks of curly Walnut coming from US soon.

Re: Eruption
Tolle Ideen.

Re: Eruption
hola,
keep in mind that oak is a very heavy stuff. May you should plan some chambers to reduce weight

Re: Eruption
I tried Risorfiner, the only carry veneer, and not solid wood! but thanks anyway
This oak reacts, sounds and feels quite different as all humidity is gone and the cells are "sealed". I am told that it is more durable than pressure treated wood, and it can be left outside for years without change! I will be back with more info, as soon as I get my greasy finger on a few boards...

Re: Eruption
Yes! I will tell him! thanks.
It's VERY hard to find tonewood in Denmark, so I do a bit of import of different things myself. I actually have quite a bit of medium curly/flamed Maple in stock, for necks and tops, so I should put some for sale in the forum.
We are now in the stage of valuating our design, as the 6-string has been drawn as 3D, ready for implementing to the CNC milling program

Re: Eruption
Good news!
got in contact with Q-tuners, who claims their pickups will be back on market last half of next year. Hope they will appear the same.....so....let's put them on the axe. B.t.w. put red carbon reinforcement in the neck....gotta build this one...

Re: Eruption
I have worked on some of the oak now....it's kind of brittle to work with....very light, and with a tone like a bell. We will have to use VERY sharp tools in the CNC. The red Q-tuners might be too far down the road, so I took a look around, and found some interesting copperheads at LACE, that might suit our black baby....
No! we changed direction again, it will be Alumitones goldhumbuckers and Schaller Vintage copper hardware

I have continued this thread in "Bauthreads E-guitarre" as it would be more appropriate!
I just added some video of the CNC working on the neck
